The PSP - A Game and Media Powerhouse

Every year, console developers strive to capture the general public with their amazing machines. These amazing machines get displayed at conventions and expos that deal with the gaming industry. The PSP was first announced during E3 in 2003 and later it was officially unveiled on May 11th, 2004 at a Sony press conference before E3 in 2004. It hit store shelves in North America on March 24th, 2005.

The PSP is the first handheld video game system to utilize the UMD, the 'Universal Media Disc'.

The PlayStation Portable comes in six highly stylish and appealing colour schemes. They are: black, ceramic white, pink, metallic blue, silver, and champagne gold.

The PSP comes with a built in mini web browser, also known as the PSP microbrowser. It is considered a microbrowser because of its small consumption of memory and system resources. The PSP can support most normal web technologies, such as CSS. There are currently three different rendering modes on the PSP, 'Normal', 'Just-Fit', and 'Smart-Fit'. 'Normal' displays the page with no changes at all, it shows the page in its raw form, like you would see it on your computer monitor, 'Just-Fit' attempts to shrink most elements of the page to make the whole page fit on the screen and attempt to preserve the initial layout, and 'Smart-Fit' will display all of the content in the order that it appears in the HTML, it will drop an element down below the preceding element if it starts to go off the screen. This means that it will show the website in a vertical form most of the time.

The PSP is able to playback movies that come on UMD discs. These movies can be bought at most 'big box' retail stores. The PSP supports the following codecs: ATRAC, AAC, MP3, and WMA. You can also choose to view visualizations while the music is playing.

The PlayStation Portable has an image viewer that is capable of displaying the common image types. Those image types include: JPEG, Bitmap, and PNG.

The two codecs: MPEG-4 and AVC are the two that the PSP support for video playback other than using the UMD disc. For optimal video viewing it is suggested that the video have a minimum of the following: a resolution of 320×240, a video bit rate of 500 Kb per second, and an audio sampling rate of 22050 Hz.

The PSP can connect to a wireless network that is running on 802.11b. This allows for up to 16 players, each with a PlayStation Portable to create a local, ad-hoc network for multiplayer game play, and this also allows any PSP owner to connect to a wireless router, to surf the web and do all that fun stuff.

PSP Firmware 3.00-The One We've Waited For?

Sony have just released the most impressive firmware yet for the PSP, and it seems to have a lot in common with the PS3. Up to now many people avoided the various updates but this one has been a lot more popular, and we're going to show you why.

Version 3.0 firmware for the PSP or Playstation portable from Sony has finally made the emulation of PSone games possible. You can download the games from the Sony Playstation online stores, and then save them to your memory stick to play whenever you want to. Pretty cool. My money's on Driver being the best selling title-any takers?

Another huge development is that if you have a PS3, the firmware update makes it possible for your PSP to control and interact with your PS3 from a remote location. How high tech is that?

It's not quite clear what the main idea is behind operating the PS3 via the PSP, but it is generally assumed that you will be able to surf the web by hooking into your PS3s web capabilities and things like that, as well as transfer PSP games to the PS3. Very cool.

I'm pretty excited about the PSone games being made available for PSP. A few early releases titles have been mentioned but nothing is confirmed, although it is believed that the original resident evil is going to be made available, which is of course excellent news.

Another major development is that firmware 3.00 makes it so that if you switch the PSP on with a UMD game inside, it will automatically boot up the game without you having to go through menus etc. This is a great touch, and proves that Sony are listening to their customers.

It's really cool to see a company release a piece of hardware and then stand behind it all the way, offering support and upgrades as well as lots of new accessories for it etc. It's great to see that, and I wish more big companies would follow suit.

Another upgrade of note is that you will now be able to Fast Forward and Rewind Music and Videos at 3 different speeds, which is good stuff, it brings that aspect of the PSP a little bit up to date.

I don't know about you, but I am constantly surprised by Sony's support of their PSP, and it's something that makes me feel a whole lot better about owning one!
